The Mount of Olives is to the east
of the Old City and near by the Garden of Gethsemene. Jesus often brought
his disciples there -- to teach them and to pray. Forty days after His
resurrection, Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives and ascended into Heaven.
When He returns, Jesus will "so come in like manner" to the Mount of Olives.
Acts 1:9-12 (NKJV)
9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched,
He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10And
while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two
men stood by them in white apparel, 11who also said, "Men of
Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was
taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him
go into heaven."
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called
Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey.
Zech. 14:3-4 (NIV)
3 Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations,
as he fights in the day of battle. 4 On that day his feet will
stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives
will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half
of the mountain moving north and half moving south.
To the right are various views of the Mount of Olives. The bottommost shows
the Garden of Gethsemene. Click each picture for a close up view.
